Fitting the starter freewheel repair kit.
Replacing the kit
- Remove the old parts and carefully clean the freewheel with a solvent or brake cleaner.
- Dry completely with compressed air.
- Check the condition of the drive track: it must not be too marked. Rectification is only possible for very slight deterioration (0.07 mm max); beyond that, replace the complete part. Check the freewheel (rivets holding well, inner part not broken, etc.).
- Very lightly grease the springs (bearing grease), the plungers and the rollers, then fit them. Too much grease is counter-productive (it slows the parts sliding). Slide the plungers several times to spread the grease in the bores, then put a drop of engine oil at each plunger and slide again.
- On 750s, apply a very thin layer of grease over the whole freewheel to protect it from corrosion.
- Refit the freewheel while turning it clockwise to bring the rollers over the drive track.
Lubrication: the 1000 and 1200 freewheels are lubricated automatically (no manual operation needed). Those of the 750 are not lubricated: dismantle them regularly for greasing, about once a year. Some 750 freewheels have a lubrication hole directly above the spring/plunger housing; despite this, it is still recommended to remove the freewheel and grease it by hand periodically.
