Fitting the timing chain — 1000 / 1200

  • Take the opportunity of replacing the chain to check the rear chain guide (fixed to the head by an M6 screw). Replace the guide if excessively worn or if the special plastic is breaking up.
  • Split link: because the chain runs close to the lower guide, the split link must be fitted with the clip on the primary-drive side (i.e. inserted right to left). First plug the head with workshop paper or rags to stop the link or its clip falling into the engine.
  • Once the chain is assembled, turn the engine two or three times by hand to check correct timing.
  • Tension: under about 10 kg pressure, midway between the two camshaft sprockets, the deflection should be 5 mm.
